This workshop is designed to introduce students how to paint with oils using the Grisaille Method. The instructor will take you step by step through the process, starting with preparing a surface on the board. You will learn how to paint light on form, become comfortable using oil paint, and learn about color, values, and how to draw with accuracy.

Using a method called indirect painting, we will begin painting a grisaille (underpainting) on a toned board. Using sepia and white, this traditional method will establish the values and form. When the grisaille is finished, the artist adds color to it with bright, transparent glazes that allow the underpainting to show through. This workshop is great for painters of all skill levels.

Meet the Instructor: Lauren Rosenblum

Introduced to the arts at a tender age, I listened to my mother play classical piano, while my father was leisurely painting or sculpting. Instinctively, I was enamored with drawing and painting. Knowing I would choose art as my vocation, I journeyed by bus and train from Brooklyn to Manhattan to study life drawing at the Arts Student League and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

At mid-point in my career, I found my finest teacher and received classical training in drawing and painting. His guidance and instruction enabled me to hone my craft through the understanding of the old masters’ techniques. Following in the footsteps of my mentor, I fell in love with teaching art, which I continue to this day.

Deriving experience from the cumulative body of my work as a painter, textile designer, muralist and fiber artist has allowed me to transition from one medium to another, defying categorization exploring my creative self.
